I have an R3120US. how do I get to the ram under the keyboard. I
looked at the maintenance guide and frankly I think it's a POS. The
pictures and procedures don't match my system. It looks like an HP in
the picture. some sections have both hp and compaq pictures but not the
keyboard section.

There is a metal ridge that goes around the entire notebook that seems
like it is holding the top sections on. It's in pieces but not pieces
that seem like they would come off easily . . . Nope. just scratched
it up.

I looked in the archives for this subject and found a few posts but not
on addressing the metal rim.

What's the deal with taking the keyboard off on this model?

The maintenance guide has a pretty detailed description of taking off
the keyboard. IIRC, you need to remove 3-4 screws on the back (edge
near the hinge) to remove the plastic piece around the power switch,
then there's 4 screws holding down the top of keyboard. Remove those
and the RAM is right there.
