I suddenly have a need to record sound with a microphone on my R3240
running Ubuntu amd-64 Dapper. I rummaged around and found an old
microphone that came with something (sound card?), but the results were
not very loud, even with the microphone and playback sliders to the max.
Figuring that it was probably due to the fact that it was a cheap
microphone, I stopped at a Radio Shack and bought a serious microphone.
However, the sound level was even lower. For the record, the specs on
the Radio Shack microphone are:
60 - 16KHz frequency response (with a graph in the documentation
showing it to be relatively flat)
500 ohms + or - 30%
Sensitivity -75dB + or - 3 dB
Monday I'll take the Radio Shack microphone back, but in the meantime I
need suggestions for a decent microphone that puts out enough juice to
give me a decent record level. I need a microphone that has good
response and is unidirectional. The purpose is to record native
informant's speech for later analysis in a Phonetics course. The
language will be one that is unknown to anyone in the class and we must
figure out its phonology.
I will probably use Audacity to record the sounds and save as .wav
files, unless someone has a better suggestion.
Can anyone recommend a decent microphone?
