that it was urgent to get this important info out.)
I disagree. There are other forums (and soapboxes) where this may be more
appropriate, but it is not appropriate here.

It reads like political fanaticism (well, maybe not *that* strong). I can
understand your enthusiasm for the subject -- I myself am an outspoken
supporter of many liberties that some take for granted -- but there is a
time and a place for everything.

This mailing list is for the discussion of Linux on the R3000 (and
compatibles). Please find the restraint to confine yourself to that topic
in the future. Thank you.

Kudos Frank.

...and now back to our original (R3000) show now in progress....
From all my reading thus far it seems clear that the Broadcom linux
drivers are not yet ready for primetime. I have been delaying a
decision whether to utilize them under 64-bit Ubuntu Dapper Drake, or to
instead take the 64-bit Ndiswrapper path for my R3240.

Any remaining strong opinions one way or another? Is the R3000 Wiki
updated with the latest 64-bit NDiswrapper installation instructions?
I'm still very much a newbie and can get tripped up fairly easily.

Thanks for the feedback before my taking the plunge.

The Open Source bcmw43xx driver in the 2.6.17 kernel works flawlessly with
WEP / no encryption (x86_64 gentoo). I have not tested WPA encryption,
however there are patches available to fix some of the problems mentioned in
the other post. Otherwise 2.6.18 will have them applied (and more).

How do you install 2.6.17 on Gentoo AMD64? I can't find it in the portage.

Have you sync'ed your portage recently? It is there. The Gentoo version

/usr/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources

While the Vanilla one is

/usr/portage/sys-kernel/vanilla-sources

vanilla-sources (meaning the official kernel.org sources without any
other patches) 2.6.17 is in Portage: sys-kernel/vanilla-sources. It is
marked ~arch so you will have to add this line to
/etc/portage/package.keywords:

sys-kernel/vanilla-sources ~amd64

...or if you run a 32bit environment:

sys-kernel/vanilla-sources ~x86

Now you should be able to emerge vanilla-sources-2.6.17.1. Run emerge
--sync too if you haven't done so recently.

If you are ysing Dapper Drake, I would suggest using ndiswrapper because the
bcm43xx version provided is quite old and causes problems. For me, I didn't
see any advantage in using bcm43xx over ndiswrapper apart from that it is
a "native" driver and causes lots of problems in ubuntu as I just mentioned.
